These earrings have been named Aroha ake ake which means forever love. They are made of whale tooth with pāua inlays for the eyes of the manaia. The tooth whakapapa’s to the Kaikorua region, located on the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand. It is a very precious material which is held in very high esteem in Aotearoa. It is a great honour and mana to possess such taonga.
The earrings are based upon manaia. The Manaia, (or messenger), is the profile of a Tiki. This is symbolic of being half in this world and half in the spirit world. Manaia can be adapted with other symbols and stylized to communicate different meanings. With open mouths, these manaia symbolise the passing on of wisdom that is passed down through the ages. The spiral pattern upon their cheeks symbolises the outpouring of the Wairua of the Atua who created all life. (From the absolute Nothingness begat the Night Ages). The pāua eyes are symbolic of being able to view what is precious in our life. This represents the arising of wisdom within our heart and mind. Being hung from the ears is special as they adorn the sacred space (upon the head).
