Manaia Hook - Wā Kāinga - True home

$365.00

Dear friend, Kia Ora

This Manaia Hook is named Wā Kāinga which means true home.

This style of hook can be traced back to the Māori mythological origins of New Zealand where it is described that the demigod Māui 'fished' up the North Island of New Zealand (which is shaped like a stingray) with the jawbone of his grandmother, Murirangawhenua.

The fishhook signifies abundance, nourishment, and strength. As such it represents peace, prosperity, and good health. A fishhook is also a symbol that represents safe journey over water. Hence it is loved by travellers.

This Manaia Hook has inlays of pounamu for the eyes. this represents resolute strength. They are set in rings of brass. As brass in conductive, this is symbolic of being able to channel great power and focused strength. Yet remains appropriately contained and protected.

The koru running up the neck of this carving represent the arising of our happiness. The koru symbol is common in New Zealand and is inspired by the unfurling of the new fern fronds. Meanings associated with this are new growth, new beginnings and awakening.
