Whale bone earrings - Huatau - elegant, graceful
Dear friend, Kia Ora
Haere i muri o te tira parāoa
“Travel behind the whale.”
These whale bone earrings have been named Huatau which means elegant, graceful.
The bone whakapapa’s to the Kaikorua region, located on the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand. It is a very precious material which is held in very high esteem in Aotearoa. It is a great honour and mana to possess such taonga.
They are a simple design that is intended to emphasise the grain and mana of the whale bone. Being hung from the ears is special as they adorn the sacred space (upon the head). As such, it is fitting that whale bone is used for this purpose.
I have used high-quality fittings of 925 Silver. Sterling silver items contain a minimum of 92.5% pure silver. Sterling silver will last for a long time if cared for properly, whereas silver-plating will wear off and generally does not last.
Each set of earrings is handcrafted and therefore unique. The small variations between each piece adds to their individualised charm. They have been formally blessed as it is traditional in New Zealand to bless carvings before being adorned.
